Karen meets Mack MacKenzie after barging into the Federal Prosecutor's office, where he is handling Sid's case; Gary tries to talk to Val following their split; Abby sends J.R. chapters from Val's book "Capricorn Crude”.
J.R. returns to California to follow up on a deal with Abby and pays Val a surprise visit; Mack and Joe try to talk Karen out of going after the people who murdered Sid; Laura goes into labor.
Gary meets a beautiful singer named Ciji; Mack continues to help Karen; Ginger is jealous of Ciji and Kenny’s working relationship; Lilimae helps Gary talk face to face with Val.
Karen invests in Richard's new restaurant; Val meets her new publicist who lands her a talk show appearance to promote her book; Kenny and Gary get Ciji into the studio and record a demo.
Gary invites Val, not Abby, to go to Dallas for the reading of his father's will; Richard opens his restaurant; Ginger is upset about Kenny's attentions toward Ciji's career; Karen and Mack get a confession from Sid's murderers.
Following the reading of Jock's will, Abby surprises Gary; Val comes to #Dallas to promote her book and runs into J.R. Ewing; Chip talks Lilimae into letting him stay with her and quickly introduces himself to Diana.
Abby's mad when Gary and Kenny decide to go into business together to produce a record for Ciji; Mack takes Karen camping; Val is upset that Lilimae invited Chip to live with them; Lilimae introduces Chip to Kenny and Ciji.
Abby and Gary move into a beach house; Richard finally agrees to let Ciji sing at his restaurant; Diana goes on a double-date with Karen and Mack; Chip is distracted elsewhere during date night.
Laura discovers Richard took money from Abby; Abby is jealous of Gary and Ciji spending the day together; Diana discovers Mack with another woman; Mack confesses his love to Karen but she doesn't reciprocate.
Diana gets sick while on a trip with Gary and Abby; Ginger is frustrated that Kenny gave her song to Ciji; Eric tells Mack about their family crisis; Karen asks Abby to get tested to see if she could be a kidney donor for Diana.
Abby agrees to donate her kidney to Diana; Chip tells Diana he loves her and presents her with a necklace he intended to give to Ciji; Laura and Ciji become friends; Karen quietly thanks Abby for saving her daughter’s life.
Mack's father returns to his life and begs for forgiveness as he is dying; Chip wants Ciji to sign a contract which would entitle him to her earnings; Karen throws a party in the cul-de-sac and Diana sees Chip kissing Ciji.
Abby sells Ciji's contract to Jeff Munson; Jeff wants Kenny to produce but Abby wants to cut Kenny out of the deal; Ciji tells Chip she's pregnant; Val finally signs her divorce papers to Gary.
Kenny and Gary have a fight over Ciji’s record contract and Abby's deal with Jeff Munson; Laura talks about her marriage and kids to Ciji; Mack proposes to Karen and she accepts.
A tabloid newspaper prints Val's new manuscript about her break-up with Gary; Chip lies to Lilimae about Gary cheating on Abby with Ciji and Val overhears; Karen and Mack get married in Las Vegas.
Eric resents Mack's role as head of the family; pressures on Gary drive him back to the bottle; Richard dislikes Laura spending so much time with Ciji; Abby’s scheming causes Gary to spiral.
Abby and Val exchange words about Gary’s alcoholic escapades; Chip continues to lie to Diana about his job prospects; Richard accuses Ciji of having an affair with Laura; Mack and Karen support Val’s worry over Gary.
Laura wants Richard to move out; Ciji tells Val that she’s responsible for Gary drinking again; Karen wants to discuss Chip's plans with Diana; in Ciji’s absence, Ginger finally gets her moment in the spotlight.
Ciji's body is discovered and a murder case begins with many people as suspects.
Gary starts to sober up while in jail but Abby refuses to bail him out; Richard and Laura meet Ciji’s bitter mother; Chip admits to Lilimae he slept with Ciji; Val admits to having a fight with Ciji before she was murdered.
While Gary is being held in jail for the murder of Ciji, it's Valene that confesses to killing her; Lilimae tells Chip that she's had enough of his lies and kicks him out of the house; Richard walks out on his family.
Laura interprets Richard's disappearance as an admission of guilt; the Wards prepare to leave Knots Landing; Val makes one last ditch effort to get through to Gary; Karen learns of Chip’s true identity too late.
